Women Curators and Scenographic Issues of the Exhibition in the 20th and 21st Centuries
The study day “Women Curators and Scenographic Issues of the Exhibition in the 20th and 21st Centuries” aims to shed light on the essential—but often overlooked—role women have played in shaping exhibitions. From developing innovative scenographic approaches to forging influential collaborations with architects and designers, their contributions have significantly influenced the evolution of exhibition practices.
This joint event is organised by the Université Paris 8 – Vincennes Saint-Denis (Laboratoire AIAC) and the Pavillon Bosio, École supérieure d’arts plastiques de la Ville de Monaco, in collaboration with the non-profit association AWARE: Archives of Women Artists, Research & Exhibitions and will take place on Friday, 28 November 2025, at Villa Vassilieff.
Despite their groundbreaking work, women curators have often been overshadowed in mainstream art-historical narratives. This study day seeks to correct that imbalance by revisiting the exhibitions and curatorial strategies developed by key figures such as Caterina Marcerano, Dorothy Miller, Ida Gianelli, Bice Curiger, and Camille Morineau. It also explores the influential practices of independent curators Lucy Lippard and Jermayne MacAgy, as well as artist-curators like Lubaina Himid.
