Irene M. Walsh: Lillie P. Bliss. Collector, Advocate, and Visionary Benefactor of the Museum of Modern Art
On January 15th, 2026, author Irene M. Walsh will discuss her recently published book „Lillie P. Bliss. Collector, Advocate, and Visionary Benefactor of the Museum of Modern Art“, together with Anne Puentz, Head of Short Courses at the Courtauld. The online event will be moderated by Véronique Chagnon-Burke (Chair of TIAMSA and Co-Founder of Women Art Dealers Digital Archives).
The book highlights the often-overlooked contributions of women collectors, using Lillie P. Bliss as a case study to examine her influence on the development of modern art in the United States. It approaches her career through three complementary perspectives: her role as a patron and advocate of modernism, her engagement with the evolving American art market, and her impact on institutional collecting through her foundational contributions to the Museum of Modern Art. By combining archival research, market analysis, and art historical study, the book situates Bliss’s activities within broader cultural and institutional contexts, providing a nuanced account of her significance and the ways in which private collecting shaped early twentieth-century art institutions.
